DNR honors employee of the year

Joy Sullivan, Flood Mitigation Program public information coordinator with the Land, Water & Conservation division, was awarded the title of statewide S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) employee of the year for 2010 during the Jan. 26, 2012 DNR Board meeting in Columbia.

Col. Alvin Taylor named new DNR director

The S.C. Department of Natural Resources Board named Col. Alvin Taylor as permanent director of the agency during the regular Board meeting on Jan. 26 in Columbia. Taylor replaces John Frampton, who is retiring in March.

Commercial shad, herring fishing gearing up

Every year, 150 to 200 commercial fishermen harvest an average 357,000 pounds of blueback herring, American and hickory shad using cast nets and shad or herring gill nets. Commercial season for American shad in South Carolina opens on some waterways as early as Jan. 1 and can close as late as April 30. Fishermen are responsible for checking the regulations pertaining to the river system where they are fishing.

The Waterfowl Advisory Committee to the S.C. Natural Resources Board will meet 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7 in Room 335 (board room) of the Rembert Dennis Building at 1000 Assembly St. in Columbia.

North American bat death toll exceeds 5 million from white-nose syndrome

On the verge of another season of winter hibernating bat surveys, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologists and partners estimate that at least 5.7 million to 6.7 million bats have now died from white-nose syndrome.

Youth coon hunt to be held in Rock Hill on Saturday, Jan. 28

A youth coon hunt will be held in Rock Hill on Saturday, Jan. 28, sponsored by the York County Coon Club. The Rock Hill youth coon hunt is part of a series of nine youth coon hunts being held around South Carolina through February, sponsored by the S.C. Department of Natural Resources and the S.C. Coon Hunters Association.

Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration program marks 75 years of wildlife conservation, partnership

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service joins the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies and other partners such as the S.C. Department of Natural Resources to announce the start of a yearlong celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration Program.

Special Upstate youth deer hunts were held during the latter part of 2011, and 54 young hunters took part, many of them on their first deer hunt.

Commercial shrimp trawling season to close Jan. 17

The shrimp trawl fishery is South Carolina’s most valuable commercial fishery, with close to six million dollars worth of shrimp landed each year; the majority of these being white shrimp.

Youth Federal Waterfowl days set for Feb. 4-5

South Carolina’s waterfowl hunters will have an excellent opportunity to introduce the next generation of hunters to the sport of waterfowling this season. Feb. 4-5, 2012 are Federal Youth Days. Only hunters 15 years of age or younger may hunt waterfowl (ducks and geese) on these days.
